Mouflon The smallest of the wild sheep, mouflon are one of the most colorful. Rams measure 27-35 inches in height, the ewes only 25-30. Males can weigh up to 120 pounds with the females only getting up to the mid 70s. Both sexes are brown on the body becoming black on the upper legs and along the border of the white belly. Upon maturity the male will intensify in color, acquiring a white tip to their fur which highlights the poorly defined black cross-band on their back in winter. As the animal ages this area can look pure white. Rams will grow horns with frayed ends reaching lengths of 20-29 inches and typically only make a three-quarter curl, arching in, near the tips, on true mouflon. Bases can be close to 12 inched in circumference. Not unheard of are females with horn similar to those found on young males, this being the case in about 60% of the Corsican females. Grazing primarily in the early morning or late evening, the mouflon prefer grassy pasture areas, resting during mid-day.
